Ik Kil Cenote: Complete 2026 Guide - Chichen Itza's Famous Swim Cenote

Ik Kil sits on Highway 180 in the small village of Pisté, Yucatán - 3 km east of the Chichen Itza main gate and part of the Ik Kil Archaeological Park. GPS coordinates: 20.6800° N, 88.5450° W. The name ik kil is Yucatec Maya for "place of the winds," a reference to the cool air that rises out of the cenote's mouth on hot afternoons.

Cash pesos preferred; the gate accepts card but the on-site restaurant is often cash-only. Fees are separate from Chichen Itza admission - budget them on top of the Chichen Itza entrance fee.

Ik Kil is 40 m (130 ft) deep with a water surface 26 m below ground level. A wide stone staircase spirals down to a wooden swimming platform with railings. You descend into a cathedral of stone and hanging tree roots - sunlight beams through the open roof at midday, and small catfish swim in the clear water below.

Safety essentials:

• Life jackets are mandatory - no exceptions, even for strong swimmers.
• The stairs are wet and slippery - sandals with grip beat flip-flops.
• Water temperature 22–25 °C - expect a 30-second cold shock, then it's perfect.
• No diving from ledges - jumping is prohibited by park staff.
• Rinse off (mandatory outdoor shower before swimming) to remove sunscreen and oils.

Ik Kil's crowds mirror Chichen Itza's - because it's the same tour buses. The two quietest windows are 09:00–10:30 right at opening, and 15:00–17:00 after cruise groups have left for the coast. From 11:00 to 14:00 the swimming platform can hold 200+ people and you'll wait 15 minutes for a photo.

Best days: Monday and Friday - Cozumel has fewer cruise ships, which means fewer tour buses at both sites. Same pattern as our Chichen Itza crowd guide. Worst days: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday during cruise season (November–April), and Sundays when Mexican residents visit free.

Season: June–September is Yucatán's rainy season and the cenote's quietest months. Water level rises slightly but visibility stays good; afternoon storms usually roll in after 15:00.

Many first-time visitors confuse Ik Kil with the Cenote Sagrado (Sacred Cenote) inside Chichen Itza. They are two different cenotes:

The classic full-day itinerary from Cancún or Playa is Chichen Itza → Ik Kil → Valladolid → hotel. If you're driving yourself, the optimal order is:

1. 07:00 - Depart hotel (or 05:00 for private pre-opening entry)
2. 09:00–11:30 - Chichen Itza (early gate, cool morning)
3. 12:00–13:30 - Lunch at the Ik Kil buffet (avoid group crush by arriving at noon exactly)
4. 13:30–14:30 - Swim at Ik Kil
5. 15:00 - Valladolid (colonial center, ice cream) or head home

Ik Kil operates as a full eco-park, so the facilities are better than most cenotes in the region:

• Parking - free, inside the park, 2-minute walk to the entrance. Fills 11:00–14:00 with tour buses.

• Changing rooms & showers - clean but busy at midday; the outdoor rinse shower before swimming is mandatory.
• Restaurant - Yucatecan buffet (MX$250) with palapas overlooking the cenote; often cash-only.
• Life jackets - MX$30 rental, mandatory for every swimmer.

Yes - the park runs Ik Kil Bungalows, small cabins scattered through the jungle gardens a short walk from the cenote. Rates run roughly MX$1,200–1,800 per night and include early access to the cenote before the gates open to the public at 09:00.

Ik Kil is one of the most photographed cenotes in Mexico - a few things worth knowing before you shoot:

• Best light: 11:30–13:30, when the sun passes directly over the open roof and lights the water jade-green. Trade-off: that's also the busiest window.
• Best angle: the small viewpoint halfway down the staircase - full circle of vines, roots and water in one frame.
• Don't touch the vines and roots hanging from the walls. They are living tree roots that take decades to grow, and park staff will call you out.
• Help preserve the cenote: biodegradable sunscreen only, mandatory rinse shower, no food or drinks on the platform, and never leave trash. Cenotes are the Yucatán's freshwater source - keeping them clean keeps them open.

• Ik Kil is 3 km from Chichen Itza - 5-minute drive, not the Sacred Cenote inside the ruins.
• MX$150 adult entry, daily 09:00–17:00, life jackets mandatory, free parking on site.
