Dry Season vs Rainy Season
The dry season (November–April) brings blue-sky mornings, highs of 28–33°C, low humidity and only 2–5 rain days per month - the most comfortable walking weather of the year. The rainy season (May–October) pushes highs to 33–37°C with 80%+ humidity, so it can feel like 40°C+ in the open plaza. Rain arrives as a heavy 30–60 minute afternoon thunderstorm, usually between 13:00 and 16:00, then the sky clears again.

Hurricane Season at Chichen Itza
The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, peaking in September and October. Chichen Itza sits about 120 km inland, so direct hurricane hits are rare - the realistic risk is a full day of heavy rain from a passing tropical system and, more commonly, flight disruptions on the coast. If you travel in September or October, keep one flexible day in your itinerary and book tours with free rescheduling.
Best Time of Day for the Weather
In every month of the year, the coolest and most comfortable window is 08:00–11:00. The heat peaks between 12:00 and 15:30, and in rainy season that is also the storm window. There is almost no shade inside the archaeological zone, so an early start matters more than the month you choose. Our guided tours are timed to reach the gates at opening for exactly this reason.

What to Wear for the Chichen Itza Weather
- Light long sleeves and breathable pants - sun protection beats sunscreen alone in the open plaza.
- Wide-brim hat and sunglasses - there is almost no shade at the site.
- Closed shoes with grip - the limestone paths get slick after rain.
- Refillable water bottle - bring more water than you think you need, year-round.
- Light rain jacket (June–October) - afternoon storms are short but intense.

Chichen Itza Weather vs the Coast
Chichen Itza is inland, and it runs 2–4°C hotter than Cancun, Playa del Carmen or Tulum on the same day, with no sea breeze. A pleasant beach morning can still mean a very hot midday at the ruins. Check the forecast for Valladolid or Pisté - the nearest towns - rather than your coastal hotel city when planning your visit day.
